This week we got whatever flu has been going around. It hit our kids first then and now it is coming to us. That doesn’t mean it can’t be a great week on the OBX for those that want to get some fresh air and an ocean breeze. Tune in below!

The Flight of the Century
While most people hate school, I always enjoyed school for the most part, especially learning about the world and I think that comes from my dad. He's someone that is genuinely curious about the world around him and how things work, so much so that he will completely take something apart just to understand it and then put it back together. I think I got a piece of that from him, but not the whole deconstruction part, that's just too much work. He and I will take every chance we can when out seeing new places to stop and read all the signs for what could be hours, to the annoyance of my wife and mom. The world is just one incredible place and what a place the OBX is to be the home for the first sustained, heavier than air manned flight.
You ever gone to a sledding hill, whether of snow or sand and had to hike up the hill just to spend 15 seconds sliding down? Now imagine doing that with a 50-115 pound glider thousands of times in deep sand. Which is exactly what the Wright Brothers had to do in order to accomplish their first flight. That wasn’t the only task they had to overcome either, seeing as they spent the early portion of their life in the printing and cycling industries. These did teach them the necessary skills and give them the funds needed to construct their planes.
They spent the years from 1899-1903 building, testing, crashing, and retesting kites and gliders in Kitty Hawk. They received information on lift and wing shape from the Smithsonian but realized that the data was wrong, so they created their own wind tunnel to test wing design and understand lift which gave them the necessary information to demonstrate the first successful flight. With that data, they took off from the loft sand dunes with a small motor, wings with correct lift, and a dream. They accomplished that dream on December 17, 1903 and today we have them to thank for the opportunity to visit the OBX. Whether you fly or drive to land on the OBX, I recommend taking a stop at Wright Brother’s museum so you can see for yourself how they changed everything we know and gave us the beginnings to what we have today.
